Vertical Dancers to perform on Bangor University’s Main Building for the first time ever

Vertical Dancers are set to perform on Bangor University’s Main Building as part of Pontio’s Circus Feast, which runs from 18 to 27th July. The performance will be the final event in the Circus Feast programme, and takes place as a culmination of a Vertical Dance Forum being held at Pontio as part of the 10 days of circus and aerial-related activities.

The Vertical Conversations showcase, taking place between 7-8pm on 27th July, will include a performance on the tower of Bangor University’s main building and an exploration of other spaces inside and outside Pontio. The audience will be guided through these areas, meeting at the venue’s Bar Ffynnon, with a questions and answers session around vertical dance taking place at 8.15pm. Following a short break, at 10pm Vertical Dance Kate Lawrence (VDKL) will perform a new version of PORTH, commissioned by Pontio for its opening in 2015, on the exterior front wall of Pontio.

Kate Lawrence of VDKL, who is also a lecturer in Performance at Bangor University, said: “I’m very pleased that we’re able to host the Vertical Dance Forum (VDF), which includes 7 vertical dance artists and companies from Italy, France, the UK, Croatia and Canada, here at the wonderful Pontio venue.

Some of the pioneers of vertical dance are here, working together for the first time to engage with the spaces in Pontio. One of the spaces we’ll be using is the main arts tower, which is pretty exciting and challenging. We’re very grateful to the university for the opportunity.”

The public can have a go at vertical dance themselves through the £3 ‘Lunch on the fly’ have a go sessions running Monday 24, Tuesday 25 and Wednesday 26th July between 12.30-1.30pm and attending the showcase event and PORTH 2.0 on Thursday 27 July.

PORTH was a pretty special experience, and from what I’ve seen of the new 3D mapped projection by local digital artist Rob Spaull, we’re hoping to offer some great new digital effects in PORTH 2.0, co-commissioned by Pontio. I’m very much looking forward to seeing Lisa Spaull, Despina Goula and Cat Ryan perform it” added Kate Lawrence.

The Vertical Conversations showcase event, including PORTH 2.0, is FREE but tickets for the questions and answers session should be booked due to limited capacity.
