“The choice of Three Musketeers was an easy one. When I was looking for inspiration to write for Black RAT’s first original show to tour in partnership with Blackwood Miners’ Institute, we looked at many ideas and classic novel titles. We eventually chose The Invisible Man to tour in 2022 but The Three Musketeers was on that initial list as a potential show. It seemed an excellent choice to follow The Invisible Man and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. (Sherlock is about to be produced in Switzerland – so I’m very excited about that!)
The Three Musketeers is an excellent choice for a comedy adaptation because it blends action, adventure, and larger-than-life characters—perfect for a humorous twist.
The story’s fast-paced swordfights, daring rescues, and witty banter between the Musketeers lend themselves naturally to comedic timing and physical comedy. Black RAT is known for our playful and energetic style, and we were able to highlight the absurdities and eccentricities of the characters while staying true to the swashbuckling spirit of the tale. With its themes of friendship, loyalty, and adventure, the story offers endless opportunities for humour and entertainment for all ages.
We have enjoyed a long-standing partnership with Blackwood Miners’ Institute and have toured Wales together since 2009 reaching audiences all across the country. I am proud that audiences book to see a Black RAT show – despite the title! Marvellous!
It has been an absolute pleasure to work with the cast: Zoe Davies & Owen Pugh are returning to work with us again. We welcome Seren Vickers & Olivier Sublet to complete the cast of four. These actors are energetic, versatile, experienced with comedy and have to act, sing & swordfight!
Black RAT and Blackwood Miners have a genuine desire to take theatre to people all over Wales and to support venues in developing audiences for drama. Our audiences are always warm and inviting and we have done much to develop theatre in Wales.
I am confident that The Three Musketeers won’t disappoint.
All for one and one for all!!”
The new comedy by Richard Tunley, The Three Musketeers is touring 15 venues across Wales from Thursday 26 September until Saturday 2 November opening at Blackwood Miners’ Institute.
