Pixelated Squid & The Universe

February 1, 2016 by

Weird science will combine with hip-hop dance for an evening that promises to take audiences on a journey from the bottom of the sea to the far reaches of the universe.

Pixelated Squid & The Universe is an evening of contemporary dance that will be presented in two parts. This first half features Swedish/Canadian B-boy and B-girl duo Emmanuelle Lê Phan and Elon Höglund aka Tentacle Tribe who bring their production Nobody Likes a Pixelated Squid to Wales in a performance inspired by creatures of land and sea. These dynamic street-dancers have sold out all over the world and their celebrated creature feature makes one half of this thrilling, fun and enlightening evening of dance.

The Wonders of the Universe from Wales’ Karol Cysewski forms the second half of this double bill and is another kettle of fish altogether (a pre-historic fish at that!). Offering a humorous and stimulating interpretation of the documentary of the same title by Professor Brian Cox, three geeks and a voice over by the celebrity scientist take an imaginative look at the origins of the universe through dance.

The tour which visits Milford Haven, Swansea, Newport, Abergavenny, Bournemouth and Pontypridd has been organised by Wales Dance Consortium, and programmer Judi Hughes insists it’ll offer the perfect introduction to contemporary dance for new audiences:

“Each show is exquisite in its own way – the amazing physical virtuosity of Pixilated Squid alongside the joyously absurd Wonders of the Universe show (4* in the Guardian) makes this a double bill that people will love to see. If you’ve never seen a piece of contemporary dance before this is a great place to start”

Ticket prices start from at £5 at some venues and there are also workshops available for school groups and dance troupes who book to see the show. The artists on this tour teach a variety of dance and movement skills, each offering their own specialty and a wealth of experience in teaching. Workshops and classes are available to those who are experienced in street dance and contemporary dance styles with opportunities also available for students with differing levels of experience in dance in varying styles.
