The Wondercrump World of Roald Dahl

The Wondercrump World of Roald Dahl, a magical, interactive experience inspired by the life and works of the world’s most loved storyteller, opens at Wales Millennium Centre on 12 August 2016. Running for 22 weeks until 14 January 2017, this will be the only opportunity to visit the experience outside of London this year.

Featuring fascinating artefacts from the Roald Dahl Museum & Story Centre, original manuscripts and handwritten letters, a large dash of magic and a sprinkling of mischief, The Wondercrump World of Roald Dahl adventures through the secrets of Dahl’s extraordinary life – from Llandaff school-boy to fighter pilot, inventor to historian of chocolate – and dives deep into the realms of this most treasured storyteller’s imagination.

Opening at Southbank Centre earlier this year, the experience has been heralded as ‘magical and mesmerising’ (The Culture Trip), ‘one of THE go-to events of 2016’ (Mumsnet). Wales Millennium Centre is the only venue this unique experience will transfer to this year, making this the only opportunity outside of London to experience it within Roald Dahl 100 – Roald Dahl’s centenary year.

Graeme Farrow, Artistic Director at Wales Millennium Centre, commented: “It’s fantastic to be able to celebrate the world’s greatest storyteller with The Wondercrump World of Roald Dahl in Cardiff, the city of his birth. This magical exhibition allows you to explore Dahl’s pure imagination and I have no doubt that Wondercump will inspire hundreds of young minds to go on to create wonderfully imaginative worlds of their own.”

Steve Gardam, Director at the Roald Dahl Museum & Story Centre said: “We welcome thousands of people every year to our wonderful little museum in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, where Roald Dahl lived and worked for over 35 years. But Roald Dahl 100 is too big a celebration for just one small village, so we are thrilled to share highlights from our extra-special collection with visitors to the Wondercrump experience in Cardiff, all this summer and through to Christmas. The Roald Dahl archive reveals the writer’s craft behind the magic.”

The Wondercrump World of Roald Dahl forms part of Roald Dahl 100, a year of celebration throughout 2016 marking 100 years since the birth of Roald Dahl – the world’s number one storyteller.

Coinciding with the experience is Wales Millennium Centre and National Theatre Wales’ City of the Unexpected (17 & 18th September 2016) – also part of Roald Dahl 100 – an extraordinary weekend-long event which will see Cardiff transformed into a city inspired by Dahl’s stories, his limitless imagination and his fondness for all things magical.

School groups visiting the exhibition will also be able to make more of the experience with Dahl inspired workshops covering aspects of the curriculum from language to music, kindly supported by Lloyds Bank. (To make a booking for a school group call the Groups Department on 029 2063 6464 and select option 4).

The Wondercrump World of Roald Dahl, created by Southbank Centre in association with Wales Millennium Centre, is at Wales Millennium Centre from 12 Aug 2016 – 14 Jan 2017, making it the longest running exhibition to take place at the Centre to date.
