I’m not a rugby fan, I don’t follow the game, but I am a fan of Ray Gravell. Known to millions for his exploits on the rugby field, I met him after he had played his last rugby match.  At the start of what was to become his successful broadcasting and acting career, he was cast in the lead role in Bonner, a BBC Cymru Wales film written by my husband. Once met, never forgotten! I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that with his premature death at 56 years of age a deep sadness swept across Wales and beyond and the loss of the man, who touched so many lives, was surely felt by millions. The Torch Theatre Company’s production of Grav, a play by Owen Thomas directed by Peter Doran, is an opportunity to be in the company of the lovely man and the legend once more and to be reminded of his stories and of his life on and off the field. I can’t wait to see the brilliant Gareth Bale as Grav – his performance is being acclaimed by all who see it.
