Theatr Iolo on the Hoof

June 30, 2021 by

Theatr Iolo will perform their outdoor family show HOOF! to families across the length and breadth of Wales during July and August.

Starring three tap-dancing deer, the show has been created in collaboration with Kitsch & Sync, a company most well known for their walk-about performances at festivals, and will be performed outside in Theatr Iolo’s Travelling Theatre.

“HOOF! had a fantastic response from families during the spring and we had a lot of interest from other venues who were keen to bring it to their local community. Word has spread about our Travelling Theatre, as it offers a great alternative for venues wanting to offer live performances but aren’t ready or able to do so indoors,” said Lee Lyford, Artistic Director, Theatr Iolo.

Thanks to a capital grant from the Arts Council of Wales’ Cultural Recovery Fund, award-winning children’s theatre company Theatr Iolo were able to purchase and convert an old exhibition trailer into a travelling outdoor stage. As part of its extensive transformation, the travelling theatre has its own solar powered battery, making it more environmentally friendly.

HOOF! is the first show to be performed on this outdoor theatre. Audiences are invited to join three little deer as they stumble across an old, abandoned theatre. Investigating their new find, this cheeky trio quickly find themselves in the spotlight and treading the boards for the very first time! Will the toe-tapping friends be able to bring the long-forgotten theatre back to life? Or will the lights be turned off forever?

HOOF! is a 20-minute outdoor performance. The performers will be on the travelling theatre stage, whilst the audience stand in the open air to experience the show. Both audiences and performers will adhere to social distancing, with families of up to 6 allocated a standing area upon arrival. Each performance will have no more than 40 audience members and each group will need to be from the same household or extended household.

HOOF! will take place from 24 July – 12 August 2021 at Theatr Clwyd in Mold, Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon and The Welfare in Ystradgynlais, before returning to Cardiff to be part of the Summer of Smiles Festival, with performances in both the city centre and Ely & Caerau.

HOOF! has been created for families with children of all ages. All groups must have at least one child. Tickets are on sale now and must be ordered in advance directly from the venue or festival. Ticket prices varies depending on the location. All members of the group, including babies, must have a ticket.
Hoof! has been made possible by the support of the Arts Council of Wales.
