Mary Poppins, Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff

December 18, 2016 by

That most famous of nannies Mary Poppins flies back into the theatre with her firm but fair approach and quick-witted remarks to bring joy to children and adults alike.

After the well recognised movie, adapting this to stage is no easy feat but with the talents of Cameron Mackintosh, his creative team and a spoonful of sugar, this adaptation provides everything an audience could want. Incredible staging, flawless dancing and excellent characterisation, Mary Poppins did not disappoint.

While there were a few fidgety little ‘uns on this packed house showing it may have been that they were exhausted and excited as school had just ended for Christmas. It would be interesting to be able to see the show without the filter of that remarkable film, the inimitable Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, to see how much of the magic is in out minds and how much is the actual stage performance.

Bringing to life this much-loved nanny is Zizi Strallen who not only whips the Banks family into shape, but can also sing and dance impeccably whilst doing it. Well matched by her fellow cast, no one hides from the spotlight in this non-stop show, including the youngest of the cast, Jane and Michael Banks.

Bert – performed by Matt Lee – played the charming chimney sweep come artist and helped narrate the show and guide the audience through the exciting set changes and dance numbers as well as taking to the skies himself!

The unmistakable choreography from Matthew Bourne brought the musical numbers to life with the exceptional highlight of the Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious routine. With a large ensemble, the whole cast fill the stage with their infectious energy and enthusiasm, making you feel as though you should get up there and join them.

Whether my memory of that film actually is fading or not it seems that most of the songs and storylines have a few  twists from the originals as well as  new numbers and scenes to bring something different to the stage version. Don’t expect a replication of the original movie but embrace the jolly new changes to the show with just as catchy songs.

The magic of Mary taking flight will delight kids of all ages. Guaranteed to get your feet tapping, make sure to see this spectacular show before the wind changes and you miss your chance!

  1. Magnificent. Have seen 90% of musicals that have come to the Millennium Centre but this is by far the best. Wonderful scenery. Brilliant actors and choreography. Absolutely amazing. If you haven’t seen it then try and get tickets to see it. Worth every penny of the price of the ticket. Ruth
